The Warehouse of the Future: Unleashing the Sustainable Potential of Warehouses

Climate change is a pressing global issue that requires urgent action. Companies around the world are setting ambitious decarbonization targets to achieve net-zero emissions, and transforming their warehouses will help them meet these goals. In this research, we present a thorough analysis of sustainable solutions for the most significant sources of emissions in warehouses, from renewable energy on-site generation to electric material handling equipment. Additionally, we have developed a methodology to evaluate the economic and environmental impact of each solution, resulting in a set of recommendations that will assist companies in prioritizing the implementation and scaling of each solution in various types of warehouses. Our findings indicate that most sustainable solutions in the warehouse can achieve relatively fast payback periods (five years or less), and even shorter periods when electricity-generation solutions and electric-based solutions are combined, providing additional benefits beyond the reduction of CO2 emissions.
